thirsty thursday.. pomegranate sangria

please please excuse these photos!! it was a party after all :) i have the most beautiful pomegranate tree in my front yard and come this time of year i seek out recipes calling for pomegranates. so when i found this one here i knew i wanted to make it for pete's 50th b day party..

soo i don't like sangria.. truth be told i don't like wine.. but i knew some guests did.. namely sam.. he he she loves sangria!!

i served it in a drink dispenser and on the side had sliced oranges..

the over all consensus.. and i am quoting here.." the best sangria i've ever had.." "this is better than milo's"..{a local wine bar} so you can't take my word for it but take the guests world for it.. this sangria is delish!!! {my niece jessie is due to have another baby any day now and first thing she asked for when she is allowed is this sangria!!}

pomegranate sangria

servings: 6-8 {can be doubled or tripled for parties}
prep time: 5 minutes

2 oranges, sliced
1/2 a pomegranate's seeds
1 cup pomegranate/blue berry juice
3 tblsp. sugar
1/2 cup bourbon
juice of 1 lemon
1 bottle red wine {i used pinot noir}
2 cups 7-up or sprite

in a large pitcher  or drink dispenser combined all the ingredients and place in fridge for up to 2-3 hours before serving.. allow all the flavors to meld.. when ready to serve remove from fridge give it a quick stir and serve over ice.. you might want to have more pomegranate seeds and oranges on the side to garnish!!

enjoy and get drink'n!! {responsibly}

take my word for it wednesday.. pete's 50th birthday party was a smashing success

good morning and today is take my word for it wednesday!! and today you must take my word for it this party was awesome!! we got to see old friends.. a lot of family and everyone had a good time! now it was 10 months in the making and took a lot of hard work {only because we decided to re do the bathroom, that post here.., convert an old bed/junk room into a craft/work out room and add bar stools to the back yard kitchen area, that post here.., convert shell's old room into a guest room, that post here.. and add a fire pit to the backyard, that post here..}  we actually did some other things, like re doing our bedroom and master bath, which i will share with you later.. pete and i like goals.. if we know we have to get things done by a certain date we are better at pete was installing the light fixture in the bathroom at 4:00 and the party started at 6:00 but at least it got installed... initially pete was going to "pit" or slow smoke an entire pig but luckily for me that became to encumber some and we opted for apple infused slow smoke pork butts, which turned out ahhmmaaaaazzing!! some of the best smoke pork ive ever had, pete cooked it the day before for 14 hours.. the next day we shredded it and added bbq sauce and served it in a crock pot with another waiting in the wings to replace when it was empty.. i also served baked beans in a crock pot and crock pot mac 'n cheese.. i had little chalk board signs designating what each crock pot held for the ease of the guests.. i also served different kinds of rolls for sandwiches, caesar salad, cole slaw and fresh cut up fruit.. we ended up having over 50 people and much to my horror ran out of mac 'n cheese, salad, cole slaw and fruit.  i actually had more in the house i could have made more of each but when i offered that or to bring out the s'more bar i got all yeahs for the dessert bar instead.. so despite a few hiccups it was a wonderful party and we feel so blessed and happy to have such amazing family and friends.. thank you all!!
i got a picture from savers {the post on how i made this will be next week}, painted the glass with chalk paint and then made the sign.. it was presented on an easel for the party and was by the front door..
i designated the front entry way the smoking area..
i spruced up the front entry way by painting wooden outdoor furniture i was given and the little blue table i got at savers for 5.00.. { the post on these refurbishing projects along with the transformation of the front entry way will be posted soon}
the backyard was looking spiffy!!
pete converted an old chevy tailgate into a serving bar.. {the post on that transformation coming soon}
i strung old pictures of pete along one of the serving tables..
i made 3 or 4 bbq sauces and offered a variety of hot sauces for the guests..
we offered a full bar along with sangria {that recipe tomorrow}, arnold palmer, soft drinks, water and beer..
lots of different choices for your drink of pleasure..
i took an old picture.. {it had an anne geddes little girl photo in the frame} from savers for 5.00 and painted the glass with chalk board paint, distressed the frame and used martha stewart chalk stencil for displaying the menu..
i served appetizers and munchies on the bar of the outdoor kitchen..
rare picture of jake smiling and he said only because poppi was sitting by him :)

uncle paul, aunt carey and one of pete's oldest friends..

the dogs joined the party after mostly everyone left..

the fire keeping aunt carey, sam and frankie nice and toasty..

i {heart} these big party.. their rehearsal dinner..
{not the greatest photo i had to steal it off shell's fb..} but i love those smiling faces..

jake had this sign made for pete.. what's funny is he had it made at pete's work and he never knew about it!! good job jake..

to wrap up the evening we had a s'more bar..

i got several different jars from savers and the dollar store.. i offered basically any and every kind of chocolate out there.. different kinds of marshmallows and a variety of grahams.. i got disposable long s'more skewers so everyone could have their own.. i also had irish cream on hand for those that wanted to soak their marshmallow in it..

all in all a wonderful party!!

jake and josh.. my boys!! {double heart}
happy 50th birthday pete!!!
enjoy and get party'n!!

tip trick tuesday.. revamp and update our old bathroom ~reveal~

we've lived in our house for 12 years and ever since we moved in i've wanted to redo the bathroom.. but i waited until the kids moved out.. and pretty much a few months after shell moved out pete came home and found me painting the cabinets.. i initially wanted new cabinetry, new bathtub, etc. the works.. then we priced it and well there was a lot of other things i would rather spend the money on.. we were able to do this room for a 1/4 of what all "new" stuff would have cost!!
it had a dingy off white counter top..
white particle board cabinets that had seen better days!!
i removed the cabinet doors.. and decided on a paint color.. blue struck my fancy!!
i painted each cabinet one coat of the chalk paint blue..
i then took paris gray chalk paint mixed it with a little water and did a coat over the blue..
i put it on fairly thick..
but then  after a minute i took a damp paper towel and wiped it down before the gray was totally dry..
i then added another coat of blue.. sanded the edges for a distressed look and then a coating of the annie sloan clear wax..
i then did the drawers and base.. i noticed i hadn't done the sides of the drawers last weekend and painted those too so when you pull out the drawer the side is now blue :)
i decided i didn't want a medicine cabinet anymore..

pete removed it and our initial intention was to dry wall over it.. but then i started kinda liking the idea of a cubby..

i have always hated that light!!

ever since we moved in the mirror was messed up..

so we removed the mirror..

talk about yucky!! blah.. we ended up having a contractor come and texture the wall and paint the bathroom. he also moved the light i hated from the wall to the ceiling so i could have a pendant light!!
now time for the counter top to be updated!! it had horrible stains on it from gawd only knows what.. so we had to remove the faucet.. steel wool the entire counter and slightly sand it all. we used giani granite countertop paint..
blah yuck!!
the faucet broke when we removed it :(

we put the black primer on the counter.. pete got a little messy.. :( you have to let that dry for 24 hours..

after the primer we sponged on the pearl white and let it dry for about an hour..

then sponged on a beige color.. and waited another hour and
then sponged the "white diamond" for the last color .. allowed it all to dry for another 24 hours.. {all colors and directions are provided in the box.. it's a great product i can't recommend it enough}
then added a coat of clear..
we bought these peel and stick tiles.. they were so easy.. they are mesh backed so pete was able to cut them into thirds and use them as a back splash!!!

i initially wanted to find an old mirror and paint it but i couldn't find one so we bought the one above at lowes.. if i find the perfect mirror at a yard sale i will buy and then use this one somewhere else.. but for now i love it..

we replaced the faucet..

pete built the replacement for the medicine cabinet.. we used bead board for the back and wanted to use chicken wire but he found something a little different at lowes and used that.. it's got one shelf {post on how we made it coming up soon}

pete and i made the shadow boxes.. i used old frames from savers and pete built a box and we attached the frames to the front.. {post on how we made the shadow boxes coming soon} i picked up the little mirror at savers for a few dollars and painted it blue. i got the tray on the back of the toilet at savers for 2.00 and then i picked up the beach glass on top of it at a yard sale for a few bucks..

the light proved to be a bugger of a problem.  when pete first told the contractor to move it from the wall to the ceiling he said to center it over the sink.. and he shouldn't have.. it's very close to the wall and i was limited in the size of pendant light i could get.. i first wanted a chandelier but it was to big.. then i ordered a pendant light made out of shells and it matched the mirror perfect but it didn't put out enough light.. then pete stopped and got 2 more lights which i hated ha.. so i then went and got this one.. it's not finished it's actually a chandelier and has hanging crystals.. but it got installed saturday at 4:00 just a few hours before the party was about to begin and i didn't have time to finish the light. i will and will update the post with a new picture..

basically i love my new bathroom.. a new shower curtain.. a good scrub on the bathtub.. some new towels and viola.. i just noticed a knob came off one of the drawers.. it must have happened at the party.. i'll fix that ha :)
enjoy and get diy'n!!
